Health – environment – sustainability: the major topics of our time also demand the healthcare system to take action
Our forum brings together all stakeholders in the field of healthcare. The WeACT Con conference series puts the three topic areas of health - environment - sustainability on the agenda in an integrated way and takes a look at the entire health system.
Focal topics under discussion at WeACT Con:
- How can we further develop our healthcare system collectively?
- What conflicting goals are there and what areas of action arise from them?
- Where do workable and environmentally friendly solutions already exist today and how do they work?
- What is required for taking action together?
We come together every year at WeACT Con to exchange experiences and inspire one another, to hold interdisciplinary dialogues, discuss solutions and implement them together. Let us move forward together with and for healthcare.
We look forward to seeing you.
WE ACT – We act together.
Collectively means
All stakeholders from different areas of the health system – politics, care, health insurance companies, research and business.
Why are we doing this?
We believe that we can only succeed in the sustainable development of our healthcare system if we do so collaboratively.
Our intentions
- TAKING ACTION TOGETHER
- LEARNING FROM ONE ANOTHER – SHARING BEST PRACTICE
- IDENTIFYING FUTURE PATHWAYS FOR OUR HEALTH SYSTEM
- DETERMINING INTERACTIONS AND SCOPE
- DISCUSSING SYNERGIES AND CONFLICTING GOALS
WeACT Con 2025: “Thinking and acting beyond borders”
Our slogan for 2025: “Thinking and acting beyond borders”. This means that we want to break through national frontiers, borders between sectors and self-imposed limitations. In order to achieve real impact, we think “outside the box” with a clear goal: taking action and shaping our healthcare system sustainably on a collective basis.
New in 2025: International perspectives
An international thread runs through our conference for the first time, with experts from different nations presenting their best practice. They tell us what motivates them in their countries and where the challenges and opportunities lie. How can we learn from one another? What can we do now to make our healthcare system in Germany more sustainable?
You can once again look forward to a two-day program with workshops, symposiums and inspiring lectures in 2025. We also offer an interactive discussion forum on the topic of communication for sustainability. The panel discussion with representatives from politics and associations will be a highlight and will provide important inspiration for the future. Establishing the principle of “health in all areas of policy” is one of the foremost requirements for WeACT Con.
Of course, there is also time for intensive discussion and networking. There will be an opportunity to ask specific questions and formulate requirements together. The overall aim is to think beyond borders and be capable of taking action to make our healthcare system more sustainable.More participants, more program: WeACT Con 24
Prevention, information and less waste
At WeACT Con 2024, more than 250 participants took the opportunity to network, discuss and develop new ideas. They came from the medical profession, clinics and pharmacies, health insurance companies and associations. Experts were also present from science, business and politics. With five workshops, six symposiums, two podiums, numerous talks and interactive discussion formats, the WeACT Con program was significantly wider compared to the previous year. WeACT Con took place on April 23 and 24 at the EUREF Campus in Berlin.
Many of the participants agreed that the key levers for the sustainability transition lie in better prevention and information. But also, that the healthcare system has a short-term obligation to reduce the waste arising, for example, from oversupply.

KlimaDocs e.V.
KlimaDocs are physicians who take more responsibility for climate and environmental protection. The non-profit KlimaDocs e.V. was founded in 2021 by practicing physicians from Cologne, Germany. Climate change, environmental and air pollution are associated with numerous negative health effects. These include respiratory, metabolic, infectious and cardiovascular diseases, as well as allergies and mental illnesses. Physicians therefore have a central role to play in raising awareness of climate and health issues. However, there is often little time during a doctor's appointment to provide comprehensive information on the relationship between climate protection and health: the KlimaDocs therefore make use of patients' waiting time in the waiting room. The association offers doctors' offices and clinics free and appealing information material such as flyers, a video clip for the waiting room TV, appointment cards and awareness posters.
You will find further information and free registration for doctors at www.klimadocs.de

“It is difficult to try and save the world on a voluntary basis when others are destroying it in their full-time roles.” This is the reason that Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen founded the Healthy Planet – Healthy People Foundation in March 2020. It mobilizes the healthcare system, politics and society to protect the health of the planet and to help shape a future that serves our grandchildren. The aim is to communicate in ways that appeal to the head and the heart. Healthy people can only flourish on a healthy planet.
“Health does not come from pills, surgery or an MRI. Health begins with water to drink, air to breathe, plants to eat, tolerable temperatures, and existing harmoniously together. All of this is at risk due to the climate crisis,” says Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen.

SBK Siemens-Betriebskrankenkasse
SBK Siemens company health insurance fund is the largest corporate health insurance company in Germany and is one of the 20 largest statutory health insurance companies. It has personally and committedly advocated for the interests of insured parties for over 100 years. Its obligation towards a sustainable healthcare system is an important focus. Its vision is a health system in which scarce resources are used to bring the greatest possible benefit to the care of people and to leave the smallest possible ecological footprint. SBK believes that fundamental reforms are required to achieve this objective. The following has applied to the healthcare system up to now: the greater the use of resources, the more the increase in profit. The system encourages costly operations, expensive equipment and therefore waste that is harmful to the environment. A cornerstone of the reforms required is to provide other stimuli and promote prevention. By focusing on improving health rather than intervening in illness, it is not only individual suffering that is reduced. The consumption of resources and thus the ecological footprint of the healthcare system can also be significantly decreased. In addition to its political commitment, the SBK is also working to lower its own ecological footprint. It has therefore introduced numerous initiatives such as switching to green electricity, condensing its business space and promoting “Green IT”. SBK is one of the first health insurance companies to publish a climate assessment and a sustainability report.
